Mama Ngina School to Get Olympic-Size Pool in Ksh 200 Million Relocation
Mama Ngina Girls High School is set to relocate from Kizingo to Shanzu in the North Coast, Mombasa County, in a plush Ksh200 million project. Mama Ngina is the only national girls’ secondary school in Mombasa.
The school, with 1,000 students, is expected to move into its new 30-acre premises in early 2022. Since its inception in 1988, it has occupied less than an acre of land in Kizingo.
Since 2018, the government has invested Ksh200 million for the model girls’ school relocation that now occupies 30 acres of land. This was after they were allocated 20 acres by the Shimo la Tewa National School and a further 10 acres from the Department of Prisons and Correctional Services.
The prime North Coast location is 30 times bigger than the current space. As a result, the public learning institution is set to be adorned with ultra-modern sporting facilities including an Olympic size swimming pool,Standard soccer pitches, basketball, volleyball and netball courts and a running track.
Currently, 21 classrooms, several administrative offices and four laboratories are complete.

BRIEF HISTORY OF OUR SCHOOL
The institution was established on 25th January 1988 as a public double streamed boarding secondary school for girls, with an entry of 80 students.
The school was started with a view to utilize facilities of the former Mama Ngina Hostel which by then had become underutilized following the inception of 8.4.4 system that phased out ‘A’ level and also directed schools to obtain 85% of their students from their home districts.
Personnel
The school has been headed by five Principals to date, namely Mrs. Lucy Mwawasi from 1988 to 1990, Ms. Beata Mkok from 1991 to 1993 and Mrs. Samba Rassul from 1993 to 2016, Fatma A. Athman acting Principal from January 2017 to April 2017 and Mrs. Omar M. from 5th May 2017 to date.
Since its inception the school has received teachers from T.S.C. Non-teaching staff are employed by the Board of Management. Due to limited number of houses, only the Principal, Deputy Principal, Matron, Nurse and Librarian are housed in the school compound. The rest of the teachers and non-teaching staff commute from the mainland and a few from the island.
Academic Performance
Through the good leadership of the previous principals and that of the current principal, the school has continued to excel in academics.
Over the years, Mama Ngina Secondary has enjoyed a cordial rapport and team work among teachers, students, non-teaching, B.O.M and P.A members that has resulted in sterling K.C.S.E results.
Co-curricular Activities
Mama Ngina Secondary has tried as much as possible to give students an education that transcends the confines of the classroom and strives to improve character and personality of students. This aspiration has paid huge dividends.
Despite the limitation of space, the students have continued to do well in athletics and cross-country. As a result the school has hired KPA Mbaraki sports ground.
The students of Mama Ngina are a force to reckon in Drama and Music festival at National level.
The students participate actively in various clubs under the patronage of committed teachers. Some of these clubs are Wildlife club, Red Cross, Ranger Guides, Cookery club, Mathematics club, Science club, Youth Promoters, e.t.c.
The school also has some societies such as Christian Union, Muslim Union and Young Christian Society which help to strengthen the faith of the students in their respective religions.
PHYSICAL FACILITIES:
The school inherited three dormitories which could accommodate 320 students, 4 staff houses and a dining hall from Mama Ngina Hostel. However, classrooms were lacking, therefore the dining hall was partitioned to provide makeshift classrooms.
By 1998, 4 other classrooms were completed giving the school a total of 8 classrooms.
In 2017 more classes were completed which added to 16 classes in total 8 optional classes.
Other physical facilities which have been put in place so far include the following:-
1. Laboratories one not fully equipped.
2. Home Science room which is ill equipped.
3. Library that was started in 2005 following the teacher’s decision to convert their staff-room into a library.
4. Teachers’ staff room/computer lab.
On- going tuition block construction is PTA funded.
Future Plans
Secure additional land within the Mombasa County with the support of the local leadership to cater for further expansion including staff houses and sports fields.
CHALLENGES
Teacher shortage (4).
Lack of enough space for growth.
Inadequate, almost none playing fields. Currently the school hires Mbaraki sports club ground where the students go twice a week.
Inadequate school furniture- availability of a big multi purpose hall with no chairs. Need about 1000 chairs. Currently we have 300.
Ill equipped computer room- currently we have less than 10 computers yet the school offers computer studies as an examinable subject.
Ill equipped library and laboratories.
An old school bus which needs replacement.
Poor fees payment.
Inadequate staff houses thus making supervision inefficient.
